What was the relationship between Edom and Israel?

When Israel separated into two different parts, what became of Edom? Did they end up hating each other? Was that why God was angry with Edom?

Edom and Israel are descendants of Isaac's twin sons Jacob and Esau. The Edomites were destined to always be in conflict with God's Chosen People, the Israelites who descended from Jacob. The Bible offers several examples of conflict and war between Israel and the Edomites. God judged Edom harshly for his lack of brotherly love.
