So I'm well aware that there was a war between the Edomites and Israelites, but what happened that sparked the biblical war?

The 609 BC Battle of Megiddo was sparked when Egyptian forces tried to pass through the Kingdom of Judah. The Judaeans refused to let the Egyptians pass, and a battle ensued at Megiddo. The Egyptians prevailed and Judaean King Josiah was killed. The Kingdom of Judah became an Egyptian vassal state.
