What did the Edomites do to stoke a fire into a fully-fledged war with Israel that destroyed the ancient city?

The Edomites (descendants of Esau) and Israelites clash in the Bible. In Amos 1:11 Edom transgresses by keeping wrath against the Israelites. When Israel split into the Northern Kingdom, and Kingdom of Judah, Edom rebelled and fought over land. God took revenge on the Edomites for offending and betraying Judah. (Ezekiel 25:12-14).
