God instructed the children of Israel to build a tabernacle in Exodus 25-27, 30. The tabernacle was the forerunner of the temple. It was made portable so they can carry it through their journey from the land of Egypt. Until the death of Jesus Christ, God did not dwell in the heart of humans. God dwelled in the tabernacle and also in the Holy Of Holies after Solomon built the temple.
