What is the purpose of Refiner's Fire in the Bible?

What does refinement mean in the Bible, and what did they use refinement fire for?

The refinery is often used in the Bible as an example of what God is doing in our lives. Through the refinery, all impurities are removed. But to refine impurities heat (fire) is needed. Going through the Refiner's fire we are made holy so we can have a share in the eternal afterlife.
