How is the Christmas tree-related to Christianity?

Hi, I've been wondering what the bible says about the Christmas tree and its relation to Christianity. What is the religious significance behind it? Do you know what a Christmas tree symbolizes?

The Bible does not specifically name the fir tree (Christmas tree), although in Leviticus 23:40, the branches of leafy trees are associated with rejoicing before the Lord. The fir is an evergreen tree, unchanging like the everlasting life in G_d. Pope John Paul explained the symbolism of the Christmas tree as an ancient custom that exhaults the value of life. When gifts are placed beneath a Christmas tree it represents Christ, G_d's greatest gift to mankind.
