Archaeological and documented evidence shows that Jaffa was a port city more than 4,000 years ago. It was here that Jonah set sail for Tarshish. But the port was probably used even earlier than that. Legend holds that Jaffa was founded before the flood by Noah's son Japheth (Yafet) who gave his name to the port.
