Jesus compared John the Baptist to the prophet Elijah.
"He is Elijah who is to come" Matt 11:14
John ministered in the spirit and power of Elijah. John announced Christ's first coming while Elijah announced Christ's second coming. Jesus told his disciples that John was the greatest prophet. He said that John's mission had been prophesized.
