What did Ezekiel do, and what was his main message in the Bible that made him important?

After the fall of Jerusalem, Ezekiel brought the promise anew that God would yet gather his sheep (and we know the important role hope plays even today). He prophesied that the exiles from both Judah and Israel would return to Palestine. Research says that his influence on the future development of Israel's religion was, at least for several centuries, greater than that of any of the other prophets.
