In the bible, it is said that Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt to escape Herod. But who was he, and why was he trying to murder a baby?

Herod was the king of Judea. He heard about the birth of Jesus and wanted to kill him as he feared that one day Jesus would grow up and take his throne. When he failed to find Jesus, Herod decided to kill all newborn baby boys, thinking Jesus would be among them. This event is known as the Massacre of the Innocent.
