Does decorating Christmas trees symbolize anything?

What is the religious origin behind decorating Christmas trees? Is it Christian, and what does it mean?

Many decorations have deep symbolic value. For example angels and the Star. And the little lights as well, sometimes candles as a symbol that Jesus is the Light of the World. In my culture, we use apples as a reminder of original sin and Jesus, who came to give us freedom from it.
