John the Baptist was a major prophet and the forerunner of Christ, He prepared the way for the Messiah. John the Baptist and Jesus had many qualities and experiences in common. They both preached forgiveness and repentance. Matthew 11:11 says there is none greater born to a woman than John the Baptist.
