In the book of 1 kings 11:31-35, Alijah prophesied that the House of Israel would be split into two. After Solomon's death, this prophecy came to pass, and the kingdom was split into the southern (led by Rehoboam) and northern kingdom (led by Jeroboam). Jeroboam returned from Egypt and led a group of people to confront Rehoboam over high taxes; Rehoboam refused to reduce the taxes and ten of the twelve tribes rejected Rehoboam and followed Jeroboam. Only the tribes of Judah and Benjamin remained under the rule of Rehoboam.
