One cannot compare between store-bought hummus and homemade! Not only is homemade hummus much better, but it is also healthier. Hummus dip or spread is made primarily from chickpeas and is easy enough for anyone to make. Try this authentic hummus recipe from the Holy Land.
Ingredients for Hummus
- 3 cups Chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
- 1/3 cup tahini
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1-2 crushed garlic cloves
- A pinch of salt (or to taste)
- Garnish - a drizzle of olive oil, chopped parsley, and/or some whole chickpeas.
Method for Making Hummus
- Soak dried chickpeas overnight, then boil for about 2 hours and until very soft. If you're using tinned chickpeas, boil them for about half an hour.
- For creamier hummus, peel off the chickpea skins, if you want a more rustic texture, you can leave the skins on.
- Add the tahini sauce, and mix in a blender for about 5 minutes or until smooth.
- Add the salt, lemon juice, garlic, and a little water until you get the desired creamy consistency.
- Remove from the blender, spread on a plate, garnish and serve with pita bread.
Tips for Making Hummus
- Use dried chickpeas soaked overnight and boiled until well-done or tinned chickpeas, they add the best flavor and texture.
- If you're making homemade hummus without tahini, you can substitute it with any seed or nut butter, such as cashew butter or almond butter.
- Use some of the water that you boiled the chickpeas in (aquafaba), during the blending process. The water is rich in protein and saponin, plus it makes the hummus lighter and creamier.
- Dress your hummus by serving it topped with mincemeat, black beans, a boiled egg, fried mushrooms, or fried onions.
Conclusion: Hummus Alternatives
If chickpeas are not for you, then there is a range of healthy hummus recipes that replace chickpeas with other ingredients.
For example:
